Chapter Twenty-Two

Kevin tried to hold his baby’s image hostage in his mind. But newborns changed daily. Had he darkened? Had his hair grown or thinned? Was it curly or straight? Had his eyes changed colors? No picture had been snapped. Few had a chance to glance at him but even worst, Simone didn’t remember having him.

Just as the doctors predicted, the two weeks Simone spent in the coma weren’t without consequences. Her short term memory had failed and she suffered from violent migraines that caused her to pass out. Ironically, she remembered everything and everybody, but nothing pertaining to her pregnancy or her hospital stay. For now, the doctors suggested the family keep it that way until Simone grew stronger and the migraines had subsided.

“I’m sorry, Doc. I don’t think I can do that,” Kevin said as he and the rest of their immediate family sat in the doctor’s office. “I can’t lie to her.”

“Mr. Kennard, how long have you and your wife been married?”

“Not even a year. We dated almost twenty years ago and recently got back together.”

“How long have you been back in each other’s life?”

Kevin looked at Jordan. “Guess like two years, right?” Jordan said.

Kevin grabbed Jordan’s hand and gave her smile.

“Yes, ‘bout two years.”

“Interesting,” the doctor said. “It appears that Mrs. Kennard is suffering from anterograde amnesia which is the inability to remember recent events in the aftermath of a trauma. It’s often times brought on by a traumatic brain injury.” His eyes on Kevin, he said, “In addition to the somewhat lengthy comatose state, we have to remember that your wife flat-lined. There’s no easy way to say this, but clinically, she had died.”

With his eyes on the floor, Kevin immediately turned to Jordan, who pulled her hand away. It broke his heart to see Jordan dabbing at her eyes. Kevin reached over and rubbed his daughter’s back.

“So what now, Doc?”

“Well, I must commend your wife. She’s doing remarkably well. She’s beaten the odds a few times over.”

“But what about her memory loss?”

“It’s a mysterious ailment, Mr. Kennard. The precise mechanism of storing memory isn’t well understood. Her memory may come back gradually. More than likely in bits and pieces. But we don’t want to force feed her too much too fast. Especially something as devastating as what took place. We don’t know nor can we predict how the news will affect her. So, my suggestion is that you monitor her visits with people and instruct everyone who may come in contact with her to keep everything hush hush.”

“But physically, won’t she be able to tell she’s had a baby?” Angela asked.

“Well, she was in the coma for two weeks and she’s been conscious now for a week. The bleeding has stopped. And according to her file,” the doctor said, “she’s lost a lot of weight. Close to thirty pounds. How much did she gain with the pregnancy?”

“Forty,” Kevin replied.

“There you have it. There’s nothing like an IV diet.” The doctor smiled.

“But what about her breasts?” Angela asked.
